Our basket weaving cooperative is working on their first international order of 350 baskets. Compared with the last time I was here, I am so impressed at how far they have come! Check out how beautiful they are. In the next few posts, I'll be reaching out to all of those readers out there who are involved in schools or church groups or volunteering groups who do annual holiday bazaars to raise money for a good cause. Our ladies really need their next order asap, so how about selling baskets in America, Asia, or Europe on their behalf? All money raised would go to the ladies profit for weaving (weaving baskets they can make over US$2 per day; in farming they make US$0.60) and also a training fund so the cooperative can learn more detailed designs and learn more professional ways of mana

I'm remembering the days of freshman year at Penn: how awed I was by your tech savvy internet camera... what a winding yet circular path you've taken! these days its blogs about baskets woven in Rwandan towns, sold worldwide via the internet.
I'm so jealous of your adventure - and proud to say I know you.
Tell us more about the baskets - what's min order? recommended cost/basket? styles? if they come with any info re: the specific woman who wove it etc.
hugs and love

Hey Ry! Thanks for your comment. More to come on the baskets, but basically to quickly answer your question...
Cost from the cooperative is US$10-11. Shipping is an additional US$5-6 per basket by air. At the moment we have one style which is going well and is absolutely beautiful. 500 of these are going to Canada within the next few weeks. Next month some of our ladies will go to a 2 week training to learn a new style which has been co-designed by Macy's. These are really lovely too, but we won't be able to produce these in any number until October. From now until then, I'd say a minimum order of even 100 would work. We can do up to 500 pieces a month at this point. We can definitely provide info about the weavers. Watch this space for a new article about the weavers soon!
